The R34 Skyline GT-R from Nissan has been circulating for quite some time, but it never found its way to the shores of the United States. This impressive supercar made its debut in 1998 and remained on the market until 2002, but it was never officially imported or sold here. However, that didn't stop people from dreaming about owning one from the moment it was unveiled. During that era, most models were advertised with 276 horsepower and 289 lb-ft of torque, but reports suggested that the 1999 R34 Skyline actually packed around 330 horsepower, which was an impressive amount of power back then. By comparison, the 1999 Corvette only offered 345 horsepower. Undoubtedly, the R34 Skyline was a truly exceptional car.
Why is the R34 Skyline Finally Coming to America?
So, what led to the R34 Skyline finally making its way to America? While there were regulations that allowed the model to be imported for display purposes in the past, it was not legal to import it for sale or for driving on the roads. The model failed to meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards set under the Imported Vehicle Safety Compliance Act of 1988, rendering it illegal.
This left many Nissan fans longing for the R34 Skyline for years. Fortunately, the car is now on the cusp of becoming legal through the "25-year rule." Under this rule, the model can be imported into the U.S. for more than just display purposes. However, there is a significant catch to this newfound legality. Although the R34 Skyline can be used as a drag or race car, it is still not permissible to drive it on American streets and highways.
Nonetheless, there is much excitement among enthusiasts who can finally lay their hands on this model and take it for a spin on the racetrack. The R34 Skyline retains the legendary status that Nissan initially bestowed upon it, and those with the means to afford it will likely add it to their collection of racing cars. We are diligently working to ensure that our customers can finally access this now-legal Nissan legend.
