Nissan senior vice president Shiro Nakamura recently told Auto Express that the automaker is considering a new platform that would enable it to create even more hybrid and electric cars.

“We don’t want to limit our EVs just to the Leaf,” Nakamura told the online magazine. “We’re the leading EV manufacturer, but I don’t think we can make it just off one EV, so we want to grow the portfolio – that’s our next plan. It could be a crossover, it could be a sports car; we see much more opportunity for EVs than just a hatchback.”

This new platform will allow a range of electric cars to be created, accommodating the specific power needs that these types of alternative power vehicles require. Nissan hopes that this new platform will also allow it to put many of its electric prototypes and concepts into production like the much-lauded Nissan IDx that debuted a few years ago.

The automaker has long looked to expand its hybrid and electric offerings, especially when you take into account the huge success of its all-electric Nissan Leaf. The success of the Leaf means that there is obviously a huge demand for electric cars, not only here in the U.S., but around the world.

There’s no word yet on when we might see this new platform translate into a new line of cars, but it's definitely a step in the right direction. To test drive the bestselling 2016 Nissan Leaf near Dallas, visit us at Crest Nissan today!
