Overview of the Nissan Foundation

Established in 1992 in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, the Nissan Foundation was created in response to rising social tensions and civil unrest in the region. With a strong corporate presence in California, the company sought to uplift surrounding communities through charitable support and public engagement. Over time, Nissan has contributed to schools, media organizations, libraries, and cultural institutions across the United States. Its grants prioritize advancing diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness, especially in underserved areas. By 2025, the foundation had awarded nearly $18 million in grants nationwide, benefiting more than 150 non-profit organizations. As a global company, Nissan continues to embrace and promote diversity far beyond the automotive sector.

2026 Nissan Foundation Plans

Looking ahead to the 2026 grant cycle, several major metropolitan areas may qualify for participation. Eligible organizations within these regions can submit a Letter of Intent to begin the application process. Non-profit groups in Detroit, Michigan, and Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas, are included, as well as those based in Mississippi. Recently, the foundation supported two notable cultural initiatives in Mississippi, giving students opportunities to visit the Museum of Mississippi History and learn about key social issues at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. The upcoming grant cycle officially starts on July 1, 2026, and concludes on June 30, 2027. Applicants must meet detailed requirements, such as having at least three years of continuous operation and maintaining a valid 501(c)(3) designation according to the most recent U.S. Internal Revenue Code.
